Platypus of my eye

Like the apple of my eye... there is just something about this fluke of a creature that everyone loves - kind of like the Penguin only the Platypus lacks in popularity. I bet he's pretty pissed about that - i mean, you've got:

Chilly Willy

Badtz Maru

Feathers McGraw

Cozy Heart Penguin

Penguins from Mary Poppins

Pingu (one of my favs)

some i don't have pictured are the Linux penguin, Wheezy from Toy story and many more thanks to the recent explosion of penguin movies (i.e. Happy Feet, Surfs Up, Madagascar)

So, there just aren't many Platypi around...let me think...there's
Psyduck i think...

and theres Hexely- the official community mascot for the Darwin project....looks like a duck tho

But anyways, i think that the Platypus is upset over this catastrophe and i decided since theres so many freakin' cute penguins around i would create an angry Plat.. coniving if you will...what do you think?

maybe i need to work on it.. i'll make a few more versions of the platypus. I mean, i don't think he's THAT upset with his flightless friend...

Early Bird...

So at my job all i do is make ads...all day. All day...all i do..is make ads. Ads for Realtors, ads for Doctors, ads for Pet sitters and of course for Restaurants. Or some like to call themselves Ristorantes...fancy! Well, a lot of the time they request clip art to go along with their promotions and the big one is probably their Early Bird Dinners (for seniors because they go to bed at 6 right after their 5o'clock dinner) so out my frustration of using our crappy ones (pictures below)

I made my own! What do you think of him? I think he's awesome :)

He's a GBH. My co-workers said "he should be serving chicken, that's funny" i said "but he's a heron, he serves fish. That's funny!" I guess he could eat other meats...like rabbit (caution: link may contain some of the saddest pictures you've ever seen)...

Airbrushing

So, it'd been awhile but i have airbrushed recently.
I kind of miss it because i was pretty good at it.
A coworker from my previous job asked me to airbrush these two wooden paddles she had and i just took my jolly good time with it... meaning...i didn't paint it till a year later cuz i'm a lazy jerk!!! Luckily she wasn't pissed and I quickly made this up for her at her request. It came out decent considering i have only airbrushed on tshirts and other fabrics.

I started with a sketch she had made of an oceanic/beach scene. Realizing her sketch was not good i decided to just use a basic beach design from experience. Bright colors, palm trees and script front. Can't go wrong with that.

I taped up the paddles as she wanted them to cross and the full design to be one.
Then i spray painted white so the colors would really pop. I had originally started on the wood but found the lighter colors were not opaque and figured that starting with a white canvas would be better.

Then i proceeded with the sky- using the spray can's lid as a mask for the sun and covered the top half with yellow.
The rule with Airbrushing with color as i had learned was "start with the lightest color" as adding the next darkest color would help blend better. You don't take black and then put red on top. You put red first then ad the black to create a gradient of red TO black. Same rule applies here. SO, yellow, then pink, then blue.

I used an old template with a straight edge to give me the horizon line with blue and then with the black, added the beach line and palm trees, then the text with the black.

Here is where i finally clean out my airbrush with a few sprays of water. Then i go back, add brown to the beach, swtich to blue for the water lines and drop shadow and then i'm done.

I almost forgot- in her sketch she had a small boat in the distance. Because my air pressure was so low (about 20-30psi because the paint didn't dry on the wood as fast as on a tshirt as the tshirt will absorbn paint) and because i was airbrushing straight ahead (as in not down towards the table) it was very difficult to make this shape without shakey lines.

Enter the handy dandy sharpie! I draw the boat with the sharpie and then fill in with the airbrush, add a small shadow and done!

To make the colors really shine and give the text some sharpening, i added a clear coat to the paddles and let it air dry a few minutes before delivering.

she was busy when i dropped it off so i never got to hear any critique- but i'm sure she'll love it. If i had to do it again there are some things i would have done differently- like i know how when she takes that tape off, she's going to have a solid line there which won't compliment the design, and i would have made the words in pencil after laying down the white, so that it would be perfectly lined up.
I also would have liked to have shine on the letters but the white airbrush paint, unused for two summers, had become too think to go through the gun. I think i should have added some seagulls in the sky too.... oh well!

Overall, i give myself a 4/5 stars. Only cuz it was a good LAST MINUTE project.

Mac VS. PC

Me and Bryan frequently discuss how apple abuses PC all the time in their commercials and advertising and even at the Apple Store in the mall! I was talking to the sales rep, wanting to know technical details about the machine (wether I’d understand it or not, at least I could deliver it to Bryan for comparison), and all I got back was some bull-crap about how MACs won’t give you problems or extra unusable programs and pop-ups like PCs and how they give great technical support unlike windows (which I know for a fact is not true-Bryan’s Dell Laptop had a problem, they shipped/delivered within 3-4 days with no problems), and it was just a bunch of bashing the competition to divert from the real answers I was looking for in the first place. This only frustrated me so I left after his mumbo-jumbo....

I made this in my boredom at work MAC vs. PC

Also, I found this today, I thought it was funny...

Now, I’ve had experience with both platforms and found just as many problems can occur with both machines. I’ve had MACs freeze on me just as many times as I’ve had to ALT+CLTR+DELETE a program in WINDOWS. I’ve also had much success using both machines too.

I’m getting closer to the day that I purchase my very first laptop, and it’ll be Macbook Pro.
I’ve been asked ‘Why Mac why not PC’ so many times that I don’t even want to blog about it.
But look what I’ve started. Might aswell finish it...

I’m going with a Mac because I like what the Leopard offers and I’ve heard from many other graphic artists that for my field a Mac is a better platform for it. I want to continue using my adobe products with ease (as i’ve had with my PC) but I also want to use it for GarageBand and iMovie/iDVD. I’ve always wanted to make funny home movies or something that i can share with my friends/family to say "Hey, look what i made"

Who knows, maybe i’ll even sweden something...

Gladiator Ready?!

So I’m watching the new American Gladiators last night at the gym and it kind of inspired me to work on another drawing...
I don’t know if it was the rock hard abs or the Hulk’s mustache, but I felt like I needed to create something to honor this show.
Now, I could draw a gladiator or some ridiculous version of the Hulk himself, but no... I’m all about the little man, the one who seems to be overlooked through the limelight... and I must say there’s A LOT to look at- especially those new gladiators! OMG I think I have a crush on Phoenix!
Whatever... here’s the start of the coolest guy on the show- The Referee!!

i will give him clothes, don't worry!

as you can see he's quite inspired by the workings of the Spumco characters.

Weatherbee

So today at work my boss asks me to make a masthead for one of our new papers we'll be publishing. The name the community picked is The Weatherbee so the first idea i had was to draw a bee and set him on top of the word. Then the hamsters in my head started to turn those creativity wheels and i thought why not REALLY play on the word and have him holding an umbrella! So Thats what i did. And below is the sketch and final version. I'll probably post of few more styles of bees as my coworkers claim this guy is a grasshopper...so i said "a grasshopper in a bee costume..." whatever... i'll draw a bumble bee and a really simple version too as these Seniors don't usually fancy cartoons. This guy rocks i don't care what anyone says. I'm most proud of the Umbrella. What say you?

....5/16/08 and so below is version 2.0 - he's more bee-like.

Rainy Days...

Today was a rainy day. A rainy Friday to be exact. I feel that when the weather is crappy on a Friday we should get out of work early. That would just be the best! Then i could go back home, get into my jammies and nap to the sound of the rain against my window. That's such a comfy feeling! I miss naps. I miss naps at college on our foam mattresses and procrastinating. I felt all day today at the office...that all i wanted to do was take a nap...

Adopt A Fuzz Fuzz

As stated in my interests- i love kitties and puppies!

As i am getting closer to moving out, my wonderful boyfriend and i toy with the idea of adding a fuzzy little friend to our life- a nice cat like this guy..and guess what- this beautiful cat is sitting, waiting at an animal shelter to be adopted.

The point of my post- which i have to keep short because i'm supposed to be working right now- is that if you are financially able and have the time to, you should adopt a homeless animal and give them another chance at a good life. I'm really excited to have a fuzz fuzz and we're most definitely adopting!
